The design strategy draws on the constraints and potentials of its rooftop condition. A system of low concrete retaining walls enables soil depth sufficient for a diverse plant palette, allowing the introduction of Amelanchier lamarckii, Pinus mugo, Cornus alba, Cornus kousa, and a range of perennials and shrubs. Rather than foregrounding ornamental display, the planting strategy seeks to cultivate a sense of natural informality — a semi-wild atmosphere that foregrounds sensory experience over visual spectacle.
The spatial organization articulates a gradient of scales: smaller, inward-facing garden rooms offer moments of solitude and passive recreation, while a larger, open clearing accommodates low-intensity community use — from informal gatherings to small-scale events. The plan’s subtle curvature reinforces spatial differentiation while maintaining fluid continuity.

Є ту дворик на даху, прямо зверху паркінга, і з нього ми зробили файну оазу — зелену, спокійну, для людей. Бо коли кругом лише бетон та камінь, тіло й душа просять трохи природи. От ми й принесли ту природу ближче до людей. Поставили стіночки, трохи землі насипали — аби не якісь квіточки, а нормальні деревця й кущі можна було посадити: іргу, сосонки малі, дерен коузу, ще шось там — аби воно виглядало не як клумба, а як лісок десь на схилі. Таке, знаєте, шось між дикістю і порядком — аби душа відпочивала. Є там місця, де можна сам сісти в тиші, і є більший простір, де люди сходяться, балакають, діти бавляться, а часом може й хтось заспіває. Бо то не просто клумба, а живе місце — люди там живуть, працюють, ходять. І отой дворик — то як серце того всього. Бо місто, то не лиш бетон і машини. Місто — то люди. А людям треба де сісти, подумати, глянути на дерево, аби не забути, шо ми всі з землі вийшли.
The courtyard is conceived as a social-biological ecosystem — a spatial threshold where residents, hotel guests, and office workers can intersect in daily, unscripted ways. More than a decorative amenity, it operates as a soft infrastructure for microclimatic regulation, psychological well-being, and interstitial community life.
Within the layered density of a historic urban block, this courtyard offers not escape from the city but an intensification of its potential — a green void calibrated to support urban coexistence, seasonal transformation, and a quieter rhythm of shared occupation.
